Teak Five-door Cabinet

This teak five-door cabinet was one of furniture bought by Chen Jieru and Chiang Kai-shek for their bridal room when they were married in Shanghai on Dec. 5th, 1921. Chen Jieru was the second wife of Chiang Kai-shek, but their marriage lasted only for seven years and ended up in failure. Chen Jieru and her daughter Chen Yaoguang went to Hong Kong in 1961 and settled there since then. However, this five-door cabinet was left in Shanghai. Most redwood furniture in Chen Jieru’s old residence was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. Only this five-door cabinet was hidden well and saved. When her daughter Chen Yaoguang returned home, she donated it to Humanism Memorial Museum to fulfill her mother’s wish of “getting home”
